I believe my JCM800 represents about the last of the all tube amps from Marshall. ENGL, on the other hand, I gather is a top of the line metal or high gain amp. I also hear that 84’s exhibit more “pick attach” sensitivity, which is especially good for things like blues, jazz, funk, soul, etc. I have very little experience with tube amps, let alone EL84 powered amps, but I have some good sources from my friends at 18watt dot com for example, comments about those tubes compared to the 34’s as being a bit smoother, sort of glassy compared to the higher powered 34’s. The 201 (and 401) is an EL84 powered amp, not E元4 like the common 50 and 100 watt cousins that became famous for that classic Marshall sound. I know someone who has both and says he likes the 20 watt better, the 401 does clean a bit better. Today you can still buy it’s bigger brother the 401. I happen to have heard some really good things the Marshall model your mentioning, it’s the 20watt version, no longer in production, and was the lowest wattage recent production model since the 18 and 20water’s first came out at the beginning. But fixing the darned things can be a nightmare. The newer stuff sounds different, personal taste if it’s better or not. Well, I agree with Voxman that Marshall really changed things from their great old school days.
